Geocaching

I have been GeoCaching for a while and personally I find it a lot of fun. Yesterday, I found something that made me a little sad. This is the time of the year that robins start heading north. Not sure why it is in the dead of winter but hey what do I know. Anyway, sadly it seems a few of them wear themselfs out as I found this one near one of my caches. Nothing looked to be wrong with it. Well other then being dead. I just had to take it home and add it to the bone pile.

A snake I caught

The last few weeks I have been clearing the land at my house. Yesterday being a cold day I looked down and saw something that look alive curled up at the base of a tree I was cutting down. As you can see, I did catch something. A small snake. Yes, “should” not have messed with it, but if I did not move it, it would have been likely to have gotten me later when I was not looking as closely. I took a ‘Y’ stick and caught it behind the head and escorted it off to the land next to me. I hope it does not come back. Not sure what it was. It’s tail kinda looked like a ratter but it did not act like one. Ah well. It is gone now.

Simple things

Today when I was taking a small walk outside of my workplace, I noticed something odd. Normally Azalea bushes are, well bushes. It seems that the team that works on the plants felt that this little bush should be able to keep it’s flower. I’m glad they did as it was a lovely thing to see this early in the morning.

Where did the road go?

For the last week or so we have been getting a lot of rain. Normally this time of the year we get about 3 inches a month. So far we have gotten about 8 inches this week. As you can see we have lost the road to my house again. At least this year since I have my “little” truck, I don’t have to worry as much about getting stuck. Just floating away! At least I am still getting my mail and garbage pickup. Can’t complain much about that.

Another landmark

About a week ago (Hey, I try to update this when I can) I noticed that my “Lil Truck” was about to hit 36,000 miles. My lil truck is a GMC Canyon that I got back in 2007 and it is nicknamed lil truck because is an clone in body style and colour to my wife’s Sierra, just smaller and without four wheel drive. When I first got it I was kinda surprised at myself. I have always owned imports, and the imports have always treated me well for the most part. The only part where they “failed” is the road that I need to drive in on. It is a very hard, bumpy, muddy, rutted road and I would not change it because it keeps people from coming to my house unless they really want to visit me. That being said, I has broken my CR-V twice on that road and the last time it would have costed me $6,000 to fix it again. That is why I moved to a truck. Imports don’t make small trucks. They make truck like cars and big trucks. And with the minor issues we have had with the Sierra I felt I should get a “real” truck that I can’t hurt. So far it is has not let me down.

So here I am, 36,000 miles later and I still love my lil truck. It’s mpg might only be 24, but at least I know there is very little that can hurt her.

Last night we had a large storm move though are area and much of the South East of the US. Evidently it even killed a few people in Georgia. Luckily for me it was not that big of a deal. For us, the power went out around 6:00 PM, but I had a plan. For hurricane system about three years ago we bought a generator. Nothing much but enough to power the well and fridge. Since I had work to do at work and needed my local server to be working, I choose to see what it could do. A couple of extension cables later, I had, lights, TV, computer, a fan, and my computers all powered up… then the power came back on about 10 minutes later. Ah , well at least I know it will be able to do the job and it is still working well for this season. Need to change the oil this year.

Anyway, when I going to work, I had to fight high winds behind the storm. Bad enough that when we crossed the bridge I was really worried about being blown off of it. When I got to work, I found that some people were not going to have a very good day. As you can see in the picture, those are limbs off of a tree. Those were broken off of many of the pines that were getting blown into the oak and sadly, were breaking/denting peoples cars. Luckily (or smartly) I did not park under trees when it is windy so nothing happened to me.

It will be ‘interesting’ to drive back home. The winds are supposed to keep up tonight.

Life in rural Florida

The crossroads near Middleburg, Florida is a surprising busy place. If you click on the Google link, you can see where I took this picture from. Normally it is full of vendors, selling things like boiled peanuts, fruit and lately jerky (made from “meat”). A week ago I took this picture while waiting for my wife so I could help her with her wheelchair and it just got me to thinking how I have changed since I moved out here almost seven years ago. Back then I would have thought I was already in BF nowhere, but for me now, this is the first signs that I am leaving my rural home as it is the first stop light that I hit after leaving my home almost 10 miles south of here. Because of a new law in my county this is most likely to be the line between city life and rural as Camp Blanding, now has veto rights to any new deveoplment that might cause light pollution and no more then one house per one acre. I am now proud of where I live. Yes no know knows where it is, and get lost trying to find it, but it is quiet, peaceful, and mine.

Needing to update

Today is just a sad day for me. All the stress from the last few days, now that I have a game plan together is just starting to it me. Nothing really bad per say. My wife, while in the hospital is going to be fine. Finances because of that are ok as I have a plan. It just a lot to be feeling right now. I’m also feeling poorly that I am not updating this as much so I’m going to be working on a goal to do just that. Does not have to be Therian, but just about what is going on. I’m going to try to get some items up about my garden and animals I see and we will go from there.
